Review
McShane here reflects on her success in using the Prologue of the "Confessio Amantis" as the lead text in an undergraduate course for majors on protest poetry in late-medieval England, describing how students considered Gower's text in relation to other medieval texts on the syllabus and to modern ideas of protest poetry. A significant portion of the essay reports student reflections on a performance component of the course in which they read Gower's poetry aloud, collaborate to produce a recording, and engage with features of pronunciation, style, meaning, and the nature of protest and power. Course goals and reading schedule are offered in Appendix A; Appendix B describes an oral-recitation assignment that includes staged revisions. [MA. Copyright. John Gower Society. eJGN 42.2]
