- Ito's is a prose translation of the complete "Confessio Amantis," using Macaulay's edition. It is extensively annotated: approximately a third of the volume is devoted to explanatory notes, paying special attention to the needs of those Japanese readers and scholars whose knowledge of the history and socio-cultural norms of the European Middle Ages might require furbishing.
